Antigua was one of the former Leeward Islands colony until it became a crown colony in 1956. It issued its own stamps until 1890 when it started to issue Leeward Islands stamps. In 1903 Antiqua again began to issue its own stamps. It became a state of the United Kingdom in 1967. And in 1981 it became an independent country renaming itself Antigua and Barbuda.
