BELGIAN CONGO

Congo was an independent state which issued its own stamps until 1908 when it was annexed to Belgium as a colony, and was renamed Belgian Congo. Congo stamps were overprinted with Congo Belge until new stamps were issued with their new name. In 1960 Belgian Congo became an independent and was renamed Republic of Congo and started to issue stamps in this name. In 1971 the Republic of Congo changed its name to the Republic of Zaire.
