Egypt was part of Turkey until 1914 when a British Protectorate was declared. In 1922 the British Protectorate ended and Egypt became an Independent kindom. Egypt became a republic in 1953 and then joined with Syria in 1958 to form the United Arab Republic. Syria left this union in 1961. Egypt then declared itself the Arab Republic of Egypt in 1971.
