Gabon was controlled by French West Africa until 1886, when it was united with French Congo. Gabon then began to use French colony stamps with an overprint for postage until they could issue their own stamps. In 1934 Gabon was merged with French Equatorial Africa and began to use their stamps for postage. Gabon gained its independence in 1958 and began to issue their own stamps again.
