Germany the empire was created from many German states that united into one country. The first stamp issued in the German Empire was in 1872. The German Empire collapsed after WWI, but the rise of Nazi Germany started WWII. In 1949 after WWII Germany was split into two parts. The west part or German Federal Republic was given to the Allies. The east half of Germany was given to the Russians and named "German Democratic Republic."
