Jordan ("Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan") was named Trans-Jordan until 1949 meaning "Land beyond the Jordan River." Jordan was formerly part of the Turkish Empire and was given to Great Britain after WWI. It became an independent state in 1946 and issued their first stamp in 1920.
