Papua New Guinea was first known as British New Guinea and later as the Territory of Papua. Stamps were inscribed British New Guinea until 1906 when the name British New Guinea was changed to Territory of Papua. Then the stamps for the Territory of Papua were inscribed Papua. In 1949 Papua and New Guinea were unified and both names were inscribed on their stamps. In 1975 Papua New Guinea became an independent state in the British Commonwealth.
