RUSSIA

Russia was an a empire until 1917 when a socialist union of republics was formed. It was named the "Union of Soviet Socialist Republics" (USSR). Russia issued its first stamp in 1857, and when the USSR was formed the socialist republics of Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia and Ukraine were allow to issued their own stamps. In 1991 the USSR brokeup and 11 former Soviet Republics created the Commonwealth of Independent States. Some examples of Russia stamps is as follows:
