TYPED OF THE 1 CENT FRANKLIN DESIGN FORM 1851 TO 1860

TYPE I
This type has the most complete design of Franklin 1 cent stamp. At the top and bottom there is an unbroken curved line running outside the bands reading "U. S. POSTAGE" and "ONE CENT." The scrolls at the bottom are turned under, forming curls. The scrolls and outer line at top are complete.
TYPE Ia
Is like TYPE I at the bottom, But the ornament and curved line at top are partly cut away.
TYPE Ib
This stamp is not illustrated, but it is like Type I at the top. But it has little curls at the bottom, and they are not quite as complete nor clear. The scroll work is partly cut away too
TYPE II
With this type, the little curls at the bottom scrolls are missing. And also the lower part of the plume ornament at the bottom is missing. The side oranaments are complete.
TYPE III
The outside lines at both top and bottom are partly cut away in the middle. The side ornaments are complete.
TYPE IIIa
Although not illustrated, It is similar to TYPE III. Except the outer line is cut away at either top or bottom, but not both.
TYPE IV
Is similar to TYPE II, but the curved lines at top or bottom (or both) have been recut in several different ways, and usually appear thicker than TYPE IIs.
TYPE V
Is similar to TYPE III, but the side ornaments are partly cut away. Type V occurs only on perforated stamps.
