TYPES OF 3 CENT WASHINGTON DESIGNS ISSUED IN THE YEARS 1908-1920

Type I
At the neck line the top part of the shaded line running across is weak and contains breaks. Also the shaded lines connecting to this line are weak. The line for the lips is thinner than the other types. This only occurs with certain printing processes.
Type II
At the neck line the top part of the shaded line running across is strong. Also the shaded lines connecting this line are strong. The line for the lips is heavy. This only occurs with certain printing processes.
Type III
At the neck line the top part of the shaded line running across is strong. Also the shaded lines connecting to this line are strong, except the fifth line from the left is missing. The button contains two vertical lines with a dot between them. There is a shade of color between the "P" and "O" in "POSTAGE". This only occurs with certain printing processes.
Type IV
At the neck line the shaded lines are complete. The button contains a single vertical line running through a dot in the center. The "P" and "O" in "POSTAGE" are joined together.This only occurs with certain printing processes.
