TYPES OF 10 CENT WASHINGTON DESIGN FROM 1851 TO 1860

TYPE I
The "shells" at the lower corners of the stamp are only partially completed. The outer line below "TEN CENTS" is also only partially completed. At the top, the outer lines are broken above "U. S. POSTAGE" and also above the "X" in each corner.
TYPE II
The design on the top of the stamp is complete. But the bottom part of the stamp has some parts of the design missing. In the middle of the bottom part of the stamp the line is broken, and the shells on the bottom are also partially cut away.
TYPE III
Has both top and bottom outer lines partly cut away; similar to Type I at the top and Type II at the bottom.
TYPE IV
The outer lines at the top, bottom, or both were recut to show them more strongly and heavily. Types I through IV have complete ornaments at the sides and three small circles or pearls (arrow) at the outer edges of the bottom panel.
TYPE V
The side ornaments and one or two of the small "pearls"are partly cut away. Also the outside line over the "X" to the right top has been partly cut away.
